The second coming of global pop icon Kanye West is the subject of a new play at The Marlowe Studio, Canterbury.

Kanye The First is Sam Steiner's first commissioned play and is a funny, original and timely drama about identity, guilt and contemporary culture.

The production was developed as part of Roar, a new writing development programme run by The Marlowe. Roar helps a growing number of writers each year to develop new work through supportive mentoring, workshopping of their work with theatre practitioners and the opportunity to hear their words performed by professional actors. Past Roar supported artists have seen their work professionally produced by leading organisations at prominent festivals and venues across the country.

Kanye The First is a co-production between HighTide and Paul Jellis in association with The Marlowe and The North Wall (Oxford). It will be premiered at HighTide's festivals in Aldeburgh (Suffolk) and Walthamstow (London).

While Annie's perfect sister poses in hipster hats, she has to take care of her sick mum, and keeps mistaking hot men for her dad. The celebrities that fill her social media feeds are only separated a screen, but that's as close as she'll ever get to someone like Kanye West.

Annie realises there must be more to life than this, and wonders what it would be like if everyone thought she was someone else.

Kanye The First, which is recommended for those aged 14 and over, is at The Marlowe Studio from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 October at 8pm and 3pm (Saturday).

Tickets, priced £13.75 (concessions available), are on sale to Marlowe Friends on Wednesday 19 July and the general public on Friday 21 July. Call the Box Office on 01227 787787 or go to marlowetheatre.com.
