The Lyceum Theatre Trust and Sheffield Theatres have signed a new lease to ensure the future of the Lyceum Theatre.

The Lyceum Theatre Trust owns the freehold of the theatre and, since it was restored and re-opened in 1990, Sheffield Theatres has held a lease to operate the Lyceum. The Lyceum Theatre Trust has now agreed new terms with Sheffield Theatres to operate, maintain and repair the theatre for the next 35 years.

Sheffield City Council supported the refurbishment of the Lyceum in 1988, which is a shining example of a successful legacy of the 1991 World Student Games.

Today David Heugh, one of the founders and Chair of the Lyceum Theatre Trust said: 'This is an historic day for the life of the Lyceum Theatre as we have secured the future and fabric of the theatre for the next 35 years. Back in 1985, I was pleased to lead a group of enthusiasts to purchase and rescue the theatre from potential demolition and, with the generous support of Sheffield City Council, The Lyceum Trust was able to refurbish the theatre for the reopening in December 1990. I am now delighted that we have reached agreement with Sheffield Theatres to run the building for the next chapter of the Lyceum Theatre.'

Neil MacDonald, Vice Chair of Sheffield Theatres Trust and Master Cutler said: 'The Lyceum Theatre is a vital element in the success of Sheffield Theatres. We bring the best of theatre to Sheffield through producing work ourselves and by bringing the best touring shows to our stages.'
