With Black History Month 2018 just around the corner, Coventry's Belgrade Theatre is gearing up to join the celebration with a varied line-up of talks, shows and events scheduled for the month ahead.
Running throughout October, the Belgrade's Black History Month 2018 programme will spring into action with the UK's first ever Afrobeats musical, Oliva Tweest. Running 4-6 October, this upbeat, high-energy show comes to Coventry following sell-out West End performances. It tells the story of London hustler, club promoter and gyalis (ladies' man) Tobi as he attempts to stage the ultimate concert in the hopes of attracting his hero, D'Banj.
On Monday 8 October, audiences can discover Horace Ové's Pressure, hailed as Britain's first black feature film. Set in 1970s London, Pressure follows Tony, a bright school-leaver who is torn between his West Indian parents' church-going conformity and his brother's move towards the Black Power movement.
Black Conscious Coventry team up with the Belgrade Theatre for an insightful conversation about black activism in Black, Radical and Proud on Monday 22 October. In this free event, author, activist and sociology professor Dr Kehinde Andrews will draw from his new book Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century; while internationally acclaimed Pan-African Reparationist Esther Stanford-Xosei will share her experiences of leading social movements and grassroots activism.
Families can enjoy free half-term fun with a special storytelling session on Saturday 27 October, featuring the Imagination Reading Café Storytellers, Kushumika Chatterjee and Coventry's own Lady Godiva, Pru Porretta. This lively, interactive performance features puppetry, mime and live music from African drummer and musician Jahman Aggrey. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.
Finally on Monday 29 October, hugely popular comedy club Desi Central return with a Black History Month special. Join Simon Clayton, Aurie Styla, Lateef Lovejoy and Slim for a hilarious night out in the Comedy Of Black Origin Shutdown.
Black History Month events run throughout October 2018 at the Belgrade Theatre. Tickets and further information are available now by calling the box office on 024 7655 3055 or visiting www.belgrade.co.uk.
