Fragile is described as "a brutally compelling, new drama from BAFTA award-winning, Coventry writer Geoff Thompson. An intense and delicate play uniquely presented with grit and insight, one man, a tape-recorder, forty years of pain, frustration and deep-seated insecurity."
‘One’ is a middle age man desperately trying to come to terms with his crippling insecurity, the residue of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted and idolized teacher. Articulate and well read, he has gone through every form of therapy to relieve himself of his daily anxiety but nothing has worked, because he doesn’t trust anyone with his secret.
His only vent for communication is a solitary tape recorder, and he doesn’t entirely trust that.
Over four acts ‘One’ spills his secrets into the recorder – everything he has ever meant to say but never could. Through a series of monologues Craig Conway’s astonishing one-man performance charts hischaracter’s remarkable journey through traumatic abuse, self-discovery and ultimately redemption.
The play’s director, Nick Bagnall, says: “Fragile is challenging and dangerous as well as being extraordinary in its poetry and theatricality. As a new play it deals with a domestic situation in epic proportions. Geoff is an incredible writer and being a Coventry lad, it makes perfect sense to do Fragile here at the Belgrade.”
Geoff Thompson’s acclaimed writing includes screenplays for the BAFTA-nominated ‘Bouncer’ starring Ray Winstone, BAFTA winner ‘Brown Paper Bag’, full length feature films ‘Clubbed’ and ‘Romans 12:20’ starring Craig Conway. He has also written the best-selling book ‘Watch My Back’.
