Monkey Bars is an award-winning show from acclaimed writer/director Chris Goode, one that explores the modern world from an unexpected perspective. Following on from a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it won a Fringe First Award, we are delighted to bring the show to The Arches on 5-6 November. Forty children between the ages of 8-10 were asked to talk about their lives. About what scares them, what moves them, and how they see the world around them. But here, their words are performed by a group of adults portraying a range of grown-up characters and situations.
The results are hilarious, emotional, and often poignant. An ensemble cast of six star actors, including Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra in Only Fools and Horses) and Gordon Warnecke (Omar in the seminal My Beautiful Laundrette), effortlessly portray the thoughts, fears, and dreams of the young subjects. They offer an insightful reflection of modern society through innocent eyes, and a refreshing sense of honesty. Monkey Bars is a surprising, moving, and often humbling look at how children view the daunting world they live in; and ultimately what that can teach us, as adults, about ourselves.
