The Sword and the Dope is a new musical comedy that is transferring to the Greenwich Playhouse after a successful run at the King’s Head Theatre. This new musical has its roots firmly set in old fashioned British Comedy. It takes inspiration from the old greats Morecambe and Wise; Tommy Cooper; and Monty Python, who created their own unforgettable take on the story of King Arthur.
The Sword and the Dope features twelve new songs including the 70s funk tune ‘The Black Knight, He’s Alright’; the Rock anthem ‘No Matter What’; ‘A Servants Lot’ - a take on the Pet Shop Boys; and the fantastic musical theatre ballad ‘At Least I’m Not From France’. It offers its lead characters: Bosstock and Rumpkin (the West Country’s fictional answer to Ant and Dec) a new twist in the telling of the King Arthur Story; and simultaneously introduces to some unforgettable characters such as the soulful Black Knight; the unglamorous Lady of the Lake and her Geordie cousin The Woman of the Pond; and last but not least the powerful Wizard Merlot.
The Sword and the Dope is an intelligent and witty new musical comedy which delivers boundless fun and great theatrical entertainment for all the family.
The Writer – MICHAEL HORSPOOL – is an up and coming writer who has written a number of plays and musicals including ‘The Lap of the God’s’; ‘Worth a Flutter’; and most recently ‘The Greater Game’ (based on the book ‘They Took The Lead’), which is currently being turned into.
The Director - MATTHEW GOULD - as a performer has appeared in many West End shows including Cats, Martin Guerre, Joseph, Tommy and Les Miserables. As a director, he has presented plays at many festivals in London, Manchester, Leeds and his play 'Baby Jesus Freak' won the People's Choice Award for the Preston Fringe in 2010.
