Written and directed by JMK Award finalist Sadie Spencer, this black comedy watches three characters in a polyamorous relationship try to save themselves after a misguided sex game has disastrous consequences. As they try to figure out where they went wrong, they ask if we are misleading ourselves to satisfy our deepest desires, or is it society that is dealing in myths? In a culture where monogamy is the norm, The New Romantic questions what the alternatives are and the obstacles they face.

Erin, Toni and Bruno are a thrupple until a misguided sex game thrusts them into a life or death situation. Now they are trying to understand what happened and, more importantly, why. Could it really be the case that polyamory is a doomed concept, or did they just go about it wrong?

Sadie says "This play comes from my own experience of embracing the increasingly popular principles of non-monogamy. I want to interrogate the idea that monogamy is a myth and explore the ways in which myths influence our ideas about 'truth', as well as how seeing oneself represented in myth and story is an important part of belonging to a culture."

Sadie Spencer is a playwright and director. She was the Jerwood Assistant Director on The Inheritance and a JMK award finalist in 2017. Writing includes Swansong (Pleasance Edinburgh, Arcola and tour, nominated for Best Studio Production Manchester Theatre Awards) and Sunset Five (Pleasance Edinburgh, Hull Truck), and directing includes Rabbits (Park Theatre) Seeing Double (Pleasance Edinburgh).

Josh Green has produced and directed plays at the Soho Theatre, New Diorama Theatre, Pleasance Islington and Edinburgh, Underbelly Edinburgh, Warwick Arts Centre, and VAULT Festival, and is a graduate of the National Film and Television School with a diploma in Script Development.
