Shoreditch Town Hall today announces further shows to its 2015 artistic programme, furthering its reputation as a venue for high quality, original theatre, performance, music and comedy. The announcement comes with the venue currently five weeks into a nine week run of ABSENT, a acclaimed commission from the internationally renowned pioneers of site responsive theatre, dreamthinkspeak.
Following a successful run at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Shoreditch Town Hall's resident comedians Max & Iván return with a brand new show, packed full of hilarious sketches and characters. The globe-trotting double act have revealed that joining them will be two performers showcasing the cream of British comedy: Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner Bridget Christie who will try out 20 minutes of new material; and master of poly-character stand-up (and one of the best reviewed shows from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Goose.
Shoreditch Town Hall has gained a strong reputation for its eclectic, cross-genre music programme and fittingly, two outstanding contemporary artists will take to the stage this November.
On Friday 6 November, Maimouna 'Mumu-Fresh' Youssef will perform with a full live band. Since receiving a Grammy nomination for her vocal contribution on The Roots' hit "Don't Feel Right", Maimouna has been making waves in the indie music scene as a solo artist and is ready to take flight. Deemed "the most prolific young artist of her time" by MSNBC' s Michael Eric Dyson, Maimouna has worked with the best in the business: music giants such as Erykah Badu, Femi Kuti andLauryn Hill. Fresh from her sold-out performance at London's Jazz Cafe in June 2015 she will headline Shoreditch Town Hall's Council Chamber in an unmissable bill alongside special guest, Michelle 'Maya Blu' Escoffery.
Later that month, the popular singer-songwriter Natalie Williams will give a very special performance as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, accompanied by her classic quartet and the stunning sound of a large string ensemble - along with some surprise guests. The wonderful surroundings of the Assembly Hall will provide Williams with the perfect setting to debut songs from her new album, Kaleidoscope, which draws together a huge array of influences and styles. Her music ranges from the rootsy, worldly, fiery and dynamic to the intimate and personal, all steeped in rich harmony, placing Williams' familiar soulful and jazz tinged vocals over a bed of stunning musical arrangements by Robin Mullarkey.
Delve into the eerie underbelly of the Town Hall's basement for The Listening Party on Saturday 21 November, the first of what will become regular evenings of spoken word, live performance and contemporary sounds in The Ditch. Christopher Brett Baileypresents THIS IS HOW WE DIE: B-Sides and Rarities, the off-cuts, alternate scenes and "b material" from his award-winning show debut THIS IS HOW WE DIE. Exciting new work in development will be shown by Ross Sutherland and HighTide Festival Theatre alongside live music and DJs in our speakeasy bar. The Listening Party is the culmination of an extravaganza of spoken word and live performance in The Ditch this November featuring a range of artists including Fringe First winning Gary McNair who will be showing Donald Robertson Is Not A Stand-Up Comedian from Monday 9 - Friday 13 November.
Shoreditch Town Hall is also pleased to report that work to upgrade its new 750-capacity Assembly Hall is complete and the renovated space will be unveiled at the exciting London première of Kneehigh's Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs). The show is a critically acclaimed, radical new reworking of The Beggar's Opera and runs from 2 - 12 December. Written by Carl Grose, with a brand new score of live music written by Charles Hazelwood and directed by joint Artistic Director Mike Shepherd, it is a twisted morality tale for our times busting with wit, wonder and weirdness, delivered in the way only Kneehigh know how. The piece will mark the first time the venue's purpose built main house will have been able to operate at its full capacity of 750+ for performance since the 1960s, following the installation of 274 seats back into the main balcony space.
