Victor/Victoria enjoyed its British premier at the Bridewell Theatre in 2004 and now Sedos - the City of London's leading amateur theatre company - bring the show back to the theatre for a short run (26 November-6 December 2014).
Director Angus Jacobs explains: "I think I first saw Victor/Victoria - the movie - in 1985 and was struck by the fabulousness of 'Le Jazz Hot', an iconic musical theatre tune. I then saw Julie Andrews recreate the lead role on Broadway in the stage musical version, in 1995, and in 2004 I saw the British premiere at the Bridewell Theatre. How could I resist bringing the show back to its original London home?"
Cross-dressing and gender politics meet in this warm, funny musical. Set in Paris in 1934, Victor/Victoria follows a penniless singer (Victoria Grant) as she colludes with a struggling club artiste (Caroll Todd /Toddy) to fool the elite of Paris that she is a female impersonator (Victor). Complications arise when a Chicago businessman/Gangster (King Marchan) finds himself attracted to the star. Much hilarity ensues until Victor confesses 'he' is not a man and they fall in love.
Angus goes on: "With the familiar sights of Paris, and wonderful decor of the period, our aim is to create an open but intimately authentic setting - pulling on the heart strings at the poignant moments and lifting the spirits with the camp frivolity the show entails."
The cast and creative team are entering the final stage of rehearsals for Victor/Victoria and the box office is open as Sedos look forward to welcoming audiences to the Bridewell for the final show of our successful 2014 season.
