After picking up the Fred Award (New Zealand International Comedy Festival, 2017) and a Best Newcomer nomination (Melbourne Comedy Festival, 2016), dazzling and daring Rose Matafeo brings her latest, critically-acclaimed show Sassy Best Friend to Soho Theatre for a week long run from Monday 19th February following its sell-out, celebrated UK debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Re-claiming the word sassy since 1992, strong young independent woman Rose Matafeo is on the modest quest to be loved by absolutely everyone in her new hour of sketch and stand up. Rose negotiates the life lessons learnt from all good quality teen rom-com movies as she becomes her own leading lady in a celebration of odd characters, costumes, and Christmas cracker jokes.
Sassy Best Friend has seen successful performances around the world at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and most recently at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where the show was simultaneously crowned one of 'The Six Best Shows' (The Guardian), 'Top 10 Fringe Previews' (The Telegraph), 'Top 20 Best Shows' (I News), and one of 'The Best Reviewed Shows' (British Comedy Guide) at the festival.
Rose is a regular face on TV having featured on Have I Got News For You (BBC One) and W1A (BBC One) in the UK, while in New Zealand Rose is the head writer and star of Funny Girls (TV3) which is in production for its third series, and a regular on panel show 7 Days (Three Now NZ). She has also written and starred on New Zealand comedy show Jono And Ben At Ten (TV3, NZ) where she interviewed the likes of
Amy Poehler,
Jim Carrey,
Bill Hader, and
Amy Schumer. Rose has acted in Liam Williams' web series Pls Like (BBC Three) and starred in an episode of Tom Craine's Climaxed (BBC Three).
Rose started stand-up at the age of 15 and has since staged five solo shows as part of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. In 2010 she won Best Newcomer at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, and went on to win the prestigious Billy T Award in 2013. Rose has also performed on the 2014 and 2015 NZ International Comedy Gala and has opened for
Reggie Watts and
Rob Delaney in both New Zealand and the UK.
