Stars of new Belgrade Theatre musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin tasted the flavours of New York City at Fargo Village's Bubble Boba on Friday. The cast of ten were treated to a 'bubblicious' selection of drinks including a limited edition New York Cheesecake flavour to celebrate the arrival of the show in Coventry. Scroll down for photos!
The award-winning musical by Kirsten Childs, originally produced off-Broadway, follows Viveca (otherwise known as 'Bubbly') as she moves to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a famous dancer. Choosing to face the conflicts of a changing era in America with optimism rather than anger and revolution, she learns to reconcile the realities of racism and sexism with hope and faith - and by doing so discovers her self-worth.
Currently running on the Belgrade's Main Stage until Sat 15 Apr, the show is set to take a cheeky and satirical look at how women have been defined by themselves, and others, through the decades with a soundtrack of pop, jazz, Motown and R&B.
In addition to taste testing the exclusive New York Cheesecake flavour, the cast were also invited to sample all four of Bubble Boba's new luxury cheesecake flavoured milkshakes including Mochaspresso Cheesecake, Lemon Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cheesecake and Matcha Cheesecake.
Actress Karis Jack who plays Younger Viveca in the show said, "I thoroughly enjoyed our VIP tasting experience at Bubble Boba. We love the new milkshake range and my favourite flavour has to be the new Mochaspresso Cheesecake because the caffeine gave me an extra energy boost which you need when you're performing in a high energy musical like The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin! We really hope people will come and see the show as it's ultimately a universal story that everyone can relate to and has a fantastic musical score with some really catchy songs."
Fellow actor Jay Marsh who plays Gregory added, "My character in the show is Viveca's school crush as they are growing up together in Los Angles, before she moves away to the Big Apple to follow her dreams. I think Gregory would most enjoy Bubble Boba's California Dreamin' Mocktail as it would remind him of a taste from home! So far, we've had an amazing reaction to the show from critics and audiences here in Coventry and hope that as many people as possible get to see it."
Written by Kirsten Childs and directed by Josette Bushell-Mingo, this European premiere production has recently finished a three week run at Theatre Royal Stratford East where it received much critical acclaim.
Bubble Boba is the UK's number 1 top rated Bubble Tea shop, based at Coventry's creative quarter Fargo Village. As well as their Milk Teas and a range of toppings, there really is 1000's of combinations to choose from including a new range of tasty Fruit Tea Mocktails, which they plan to expand in late April - early May.
