Ahead of opening night for THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST at the Wyvern Theatre, multi award winning actress Siân Phillips CBE (I Claudius, Dune, The Age of Innocence) reimagined one of the play's most famous lines at the Swindon Designer Outlet. Scroll down for photos!
Phillips plays the severe and upper-class Lady Bracknell whose line "A handbag??" is perhaps the play's best known, having been immortalised by Dame Edith Evans in its 1952 film version.
Oscar Wilde fans will recognise the famous line as the play's key turning point - when the uncompromising Lady Bracknell first discovers that her prospective son-in-law has incredibly humble roots, having been discovered abandoned in a handbag as a child. The play is considered one of Wilde's most effective critiques of Victorian society.
Today 27 October Siân Phillips shone a new light on the iconic line by appearing at one of Swindon's most prominent handbag retailers, Osprey London at the Swindon Designer Outlet, for photographs instore and with Osprey's giant handbag (below).
Siân joins a star cast including Nigel Havers, Rosalind Ayres, Martin Jarvis and Christine Kavanagh at the Wyvern Theatre for THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST from today 27 - Sat 31 October. This new production is directed byLucy Bailey, designed by William Dudley with added material written by Simon Brett, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, and composition and sound design by Tom Mills.
