Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Dominic Haddock & Kate Mara for OperaUpClose present THE TURN OF THE SCREW Directed by Edward Dick at London's Little Opera House at the King's Head Theatre. The play is written by Benjamin Britten.
Britten's terrifying chamber opera THE TURN OF THE SCREW, based on Henry James' thriller, comes to London's Little Opera House this summer.
Director Edward Dick's psychological approach to the piece promises to breathe intense new life into Britten's ghostly classic and create an atmosphere of claustrophobic foreboding in the 107-seat theatre.
A young Governess (Katie Bird) becomes convinced that the angelic children in her care are possessed by ghosts. Isolated and naïve, yet determined to save her wards, she finds her grip on reality slipping, with tragic consequences. The production features a starkly beautiful design by Signe Beckmann and video projection by Richard Bleasdale.
Edward Dick trained with Cheek by Jowl. His recent work includes The Fastest Clock in the Universe (Hampstead Theatre); Twelfth Night (Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park); Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare's Globe); Opera includes The Rape of Lucretia (Aldeburgh), Elektra (Opera de Nice) and this autumn will direct the world premiere of Tarik O'Regan's chamber opera Heart of Darkness at the Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House.
Musical Director David Eaton studied piano at the RCM under Yonty Solomon. He is the Musical Director of Charles Court Opera and a member of Eaton-Young Duo, who are Park Lane young artists, and have performed at St. John's Smith Square, Purcell Room, and Wigmore Hall. He has performed on BBC Radio 3's In Tune, ‘Songs of Praise', and The Paul O'Grady Show.
The King's Head Theatre is London's first pub theatre since Shakespeare's time, founded in 1970 by American maverick Dan Crawford, with 45 West-End/Broadway transfers to its credit. Adam Spreadbury-Maher became the venue's second Artistic Director in March 2010 and has since established a programme of Opera and Musical Theatre, reinventing the venue as London's Little Opera House. The theatre is now home to a repertory season of in-house productions by the multi-award winning resident company OperaUpClose. OperaUpClose have recently won the Olivier award for Best New Opera (La Bohème), redefining the boundaries of opera.
The Turn of the Screw will be showing in rep along with Mark Ravenhill's critically acclaimed smash hit, The Coronation of Poppea, and OperaUpClose's co-artistic director Robin Norton-Hales productions of La Bohème and The Barber of Seville. OperaUpClose is currently working on a very exciting collaboration with the Soho Theatre on Don Giovanni, due to open in August, and with Daniel Slater directing Verdi's Macbeth, opening in September at the King's Head Theatre.
