Following the success of their first festival last year, Ovalhouse presents BRIXTON CITY FESTIVAL 2017 from Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 September, in and around the streets of Brixton, South London. This staycation weekender will see theatre makers, musicians and spoken word artists performing at the venue and throughout Brixton. There will also be large scale roller skating and hula-hooping for family and friends.

Brixton City Festival is part of a series of exciting events leading up to the relocation of Ovalhouse to its brand new home in 2020. The new venue will provide a hub for artists, innovation and culture in the heart of Brixton. This festival is delivered in association with Brixton Design Trail and with Ovalhouse have transformed the former food court in Atlantic Road into a festival arts and information space for both events.

"Our love for Brixton is real! We are excited to again be celebrating Brixton with radical agendas, serious fun, things to get you moving and shaking - wrapped up in a weekend of free activities. Simply watch a great piece of theatre; jump in a car and take an extraordinary solo journey, walk through the political history of Brixton with some grime and poetry or be brave and take the 6 hour midnight tour of Brixton! This is no ordinary festival, but then again Brixton is no ordinary place!" Stella Kanu, Executive Producer, Ovalhouse

The revolutionary Brixton City Festival programme kicks off on Thursday 21 September at Ovalhouse's car park with gay socialist folk band Gerald Winstanley's Mobile Incitement Unit presenting theatre and music that explore the 'history of protest' in England. The event also features the Black Smock Band, Sarah Jeanpierre & Rhiannon Kelly and is devised by Daedalus Theatre Company. From Friday 22 September there will be a Spoken Word tour of radical Brixton with poet and activist Potent Whisper. On Saturday 23 September Ovalhouse will showcase young musical talent with Raw Material and present Lara Lee's Wonders of Brixton. Fresh from his sell-out success in Edinburgh Fringe, Inua Ellams invites audiences to join him on The Midnight Run where strangers gather with local artists and activists to explore, play and create whilst the city sleeps.

Finally, on Sunday 24 September Poet Rebecca Tantony and director Raquel Meseguer (Lost Dog), present All The Journeys I Never Took, an immersive spoken word show with an all-female team. The final day also sees a culmination of hula-hooping and roller-disco en mass with Marawa's Majorettes and sees Bootworks cycling through Brixton with their mobile jukeboxes.
