It has toured the world from the West End to Broadway, Hong Kong and down under, but now the National Theatre's award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors returns to London with a new production by Sedos at the Bridewell Theatre off Fleet Street, from 4 to 8 October 2016. An adaptation by Richard Bean of Carlo Goldini's The Servant of Two Masters, the play tells the story of an Essex wide-boy and his desperate attempts to keep his two employers apart.

Brighton, 1963. Francis Henshall is minder to Roscoe Crabbe, who is in town to collect money from his fiancee's dad. But Roscoe is really Rachel, his sister, posing as her brother who has been killed by her boyfriend, Stanley Stubbers. Henshall takes an opportunity to make a few extra bob helping Stubbers as well as Roscoe. However, avoiding his two guvnors finding out is easier said than done.

One Man, Two Guvnors was first performed to critical acclaim by the National at the Lyttelton Theatre before touring the UK, transferring to the West End, followed by Broadway (where leading man James Corden won the Best Actor Tony Award) and then touring internationally.

Alex Baker, who is debuting as a director for Sedos, commented: "I'll admit I didn't have particularly high expectations of One Man, Two Guvnors when I first saw it at the National five years ago.

"However, Richard Bean's script is wonderful; reminiscent of the old Carry On movies, but with far sharper dialogue. Though set in 1960s Brighton, the play is true to the commedia dell'arte style of theatre in which Servant of Two Masters sits. In our version, we have tried to maintain fidelity to that spirit of the original.

"With the benefit of hindsight, it is little surprise my expectations of that night all those years ago were so dramatically surpassed and I'm thrilled that the show is part of Sedos' 2016 programme."

Since 2012 Sedos has been the resident theatre company at the Bridewell Theatre.
