A site-specific performance from multi award-winning artist Nic Green which interweaves radio-broadcast stories with composition for chorus and hand-cast bells
Govan Graving Docks, Glasgow: 1st - 30thth September 2016
Created especially for Govan's iconic and rarely accessible Graving Dock no. 3, this unique new work will unite people, place and acoustic instrumentation across three significant evenings in the September lunar calendar: 1st, 16th and 30th September.
Featuring women from across Glasgow celebrating their birthdays on these dates, the performance will transmit the women's stories as radio broadcasts with accompanying compositions for bells and voice ringing out from the docks as the low tide turns. The 16th September performance is part of Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival with the full moon performance falling inside the festivals duration.
Nic Green said: "After many years visiting the docks, meeting folks in Govan and learning from and about the river, I am thrilled to be close to presenting TURN from the heart of the magnificent Graving Docks. The piece will bring into focus 'cycles' of many scales to reflect on ideas of 'turning'. In making this work, I have been spending time making bells, singing rounds and hearing the stories and experiences of women who will celebrate their birthdays with us on the days of the performances. I am so excited that these threads will finally come together to weave what I hope will be a very special set of performances, structured around the lunar calendar and the low, turning tide in Govan."
Anne McChlery, Director, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, organisers of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival, said: "In 2016 we are delighted to feature TURN in the Glasgow Doors Open Days programme of events. The performance provides a truly unique opportunity for people to experience the Govan Graving Docks and embodies the core ethos of Doors Open Days; giving people exceptional opportunities to explore Glasgow's built heritage and get behind the scenes to learn about the city."
Andrew Barnett, Director of the Gulbenkian Foundation UK Branch, said: "We supported TURN because of our strongly held belief that participating in the performing arts brings enormous benefits to society, especially when the writers and actors are the voices rarely heard from. We wish Nic and her team all the best with the project."
Running Time: 120 mins approx | Suitable for ages: 14+ (due to the nature of the site all Audience members are reminded that attending TURN is at their own risk. On site stewards will inform audiences of the potential hazards of the site at a pre-show briefing)
