New International Encounter, critically acclaimed interNational Theatre company celebrates their 10th birthday with their very own festival in Norway and the UK performances of a brand new show, Tales from a Sea Journey.

The last 10 years have been a real rollercoaster ride for NIE, creating 11 original shows, touring to 27 different countries across 3 continents and winning a plethora of awards along the way and this is just the beginning of their journey.

NIE are now preparing to head to the UK when Tales from a Sea Journey drops anchor at The Pleasance, Islington on 9 and 10 May.

The idea for the show came to life back in April 2010, when most of northern Europe came to a standstill due to the ash cloud. 8 of NIE's ensemble of European artists ventured south into the high seas and travelled half way across the planet from Le Havre in France to Guadeloupe in the West Indies. But this was no cruise; they travelled on a working boat, a cargo ship carrying secret goods from one continent to another. This gave the creative team a valuable insight into what it is really like to travel upon the majestic and powerful ocean. Seeing nothing around you for days and days, coping with sea sickness and claustrophobia, and then finally being able to smell the land a day or two before it even came into sight, were just some of the things that NIE's would-be sailors experienced whilst on board. Their own experiences of travelling the seas delicately mix with nautical tales and legends from across Europe including that of a naval officer struggling to survive the perils of the Indian Ocean as he flees Japanese soldiers with hilarious consequences, and the story of Lisbet, a Danish school teacher heading off into the big wide world across the big wide ocean carrying with her the most precious thing in her world.
