This year marks the 30th anniversary of Goodnight Mister Tom, and on Wednesday 13 April writer Michelle Magorian will read from Goodnight Mister Tom at John Lewis in Kingston at 3.30pm. The event is free of charge and no booking necessary. All ages are very welcome.

One of the most moving stories ever written, Goodnight Mister Tom is set in the build-up to the Second World War, and tells the story of a young boy called William Beech, who is evacuated to the countryside and builds a remarkable friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley (Oliver Ford Davies Star Wars, Kavanagh QC). All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London. A tale of two broken souls, Goodnight Mister Tom celebrates the value of love and proves that friendship knows no barriers.

This new adaptation is by children's playwright David Wood OBE whose adaptations of Guess How Much I Love You, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and George's Marvellous Medicine have played at the Rose.

As a part of the Rose Plus scheme there will be a number of events taking place during the run of Goodnight Mister Tom including a Page to Stage workshop, a Post-show talk, a Touch Tour and an Audio Described performance.
