MUCKY KID is the debut play by Sam Potter. In rural Norfolk, two young women are on the run from prison. Two young men are looking to escape their sleepy, village life. We follow the story of Mae: she has been in prison since she was ten and thinks it¹s about time she did something different. Does a national hate figure deserve a second chance?
Sam Potter grew up in Norfolk, near a Category C prison which suffered a spate of dramatic escapes in its first year. There was even a rumour amongst the local teenagers that Mary Bell lived in the area. On becoming a parent the playwright wanted to understand why a child might murder another child. Her search for answers included interviews with ex-offenders and research around the cases of Mary Bell, Jon Venables and other crimes committed by children. This new play asks if the best way to protect our own children is to consider the lives of those that we failed to protect.
MUCKY KID will be directed by James Farrell. Recent credits include The Handlebards (National Tour Summer 2013) and Twelfth Night (Royal and Derngate). He was also Associate Director on Neville¹s Island (Chichester Festival Theatre) and staff director on Good Night Mister Tom (West End & National Tour).
Sam Potter¹s directing credits are extensive and include Tu I Teraz: Here And Now (Hampstead Theatre, Nuffield Theatre, Colchester Mercury), Breathing Coprses (Theatre Souk), SH*T-MIX (Trafalgar Studios), Snowbound (Trafalgar Studios), In Spitting Distance (NT Platform). She has been a staff director at the National Theatre and was the Literary Manager for Out of Joint.
