The Action for Children's Arts J.M. Barrie Award is given annually to a children's arts practitioner or organisation whose work, in the view of the ACA, will stand the test of time. Former winners include Shirley Hughes, Roger McGough, Quentin Blake, Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, Judith Kerr and Dick King-Smith
Lyndie Wright, who with her husband John founded Little Angel 50 years ago, to receive the 2011
J.M. Barrie Award for her outstanding work as a theatre practitioner specializing in children and young people. The award will be given to Lyndie at the theatre on 4 September 2011 at a ceremony where there will be citations from Penny Francis MBE (Lecturer and international consultant in puppetry) and the author, poet, broadcaster and Little Angel patron Michael Rosen. Along with the green heritage plaque in John's memory placed on the building on 9 July 2011, this award for Lyndie serves as a much deserved tribute to the couple we are celebrating throughout this year.
Some tickets for the
J.M. Barrie Award ceremony are still available from the Little Angel box office. Tickets are £10 each to include refreshments.
The 50th birthday celebrations continue with THE WILD NIGHT OF THE WITCHES for ages 5 and up. The Little Angel opened its doors in 1961 with a 35 minute long string marionette performance of this show, a rollicking marionette romp. To celebrate Little Angel's and its anniversary, we are refurbishing and reviving the production with a cast of trainee marionettists. There will be five performances only from 9-11 September.
THE WILD NIGHT OF THE WITCHES will be directed by Ronnie le Drew and Sarah Wright. The puppets were made by
John Wright. The cast were chosen from a number of applicants; the final decision was made by a panel of Lyndie Wright, Ronnie le Drew, Sarah Wright and Peter Glanville. The cast are: Matt Hutchinson, Ewan McIntyre, Andrea Sadler, Jonathan Storey (Artistic Associate 2011), Tim Sykes, Catherine Thomas and Amy Whelan.
The two rival witches Mrs. Itchweed and Gerty MacNamara battle furiously over poisons and cough potions, while Mrs. Rushbridges and Miss Pinkney battle over Mr. Gimp! You can be sure it all ends in a wedding...or?
