PAGLIACCI by Leoncavallo, Directed in a new version by Anna Gregory
Musical Direction by Kelvin Lim
THE GREAT CIRCUS TRAGEDY COMES TO ISLINGTON
London's Little Opera House introduces a brand new version
of Leoncavallo's PAGLIACCI, following on from the premiere of "Madam Butterfly" in a ground-breaking fringe repertory season, and featuring one of the most famous arias in opera, "Recitar!... Vesti la giubba!"
Clowns, musicians and dancers are on tour in provincial Europe. Offstage one of the actors suspects his wife of cheating. Onstage he enacts his vengeance. Ruggiero Leoncavallo's opera PAGLIACCI is a dark grotesque tale where The Players' personal lives spill onto the stage in this gritty tale of jealousy and murder.
The opera is inspired by a true story that only emerged when Leoncavallo defended himself against charges of plagiarism. As a child he witnessed a murder during an actual performance, and Leoncavallo's own father - a judge - presided over the case. A classic story with a real-life twist. PAGLIACCI was last produced at the Royal Opera House in 2003. In this brand new OperaUpClose production, illusions of romance are stripped away to reveal the brutal, seedy nature of human nature in a grotesque comedia dell arte fairground.
