After the success of their inaugural production in 2011, Sheffield People's Theatre, with an ensemble of local people, present 20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield from today 8 - Saturday 13 April in the Studio Theatre.
Directed and conceived by Sheffield Theatres' Creative Producer Andrew Loretto, the production features a compilation of five minute plays from eighteen writers all with a connection to the city. This new production is full of dramatic, quirky and surprising perceptions of Sheffield in the twenty-first century.
The eighteen writers have a range of local and international experience and include Tim Etchells from Sheffield based performers Forced Entertainment; Stephanie Street, last at the Crucible Studio Theatre with her production of Sisters; DC Moore, whose new play Straight opened to critical acclaim in the Crucible Studio Theatre in November 2012; Kate O' Reilly, whose Olympic inspired play LeanerFasterStronger was directed by Andrew Loretto last year; Tom Lodge, currently studying English Literature and Theatre at Sheffield University and Sheffield-born Chris Bush who has recently completed a writer's attachment at The National Theatre Studio and is currently the Pearson Playwright in Residence at Sheffield Theatres.
20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield features a local company of actors aged between 12 and 85 and live music onstage performed by Musical Director Moony Wainwright. The final company of 62 performers was selected from a series of auditions held at the theatre and across the city from December to February after a hugely positive response to the initial advert.
Joining the Creative Team alongside Andrew Loretto is Designer Tom Rogers (Racing Demon), Lighting Designer Gary Longfield (Cinderella), Sound Designer Nick Greenhill (Cinderella), Musical Director Moony Wainwright and Movement Director Lucy Cullingford (Constellations, Royal Court).Andrew Loretto, Creative Producer and Director of the production, said: '20 Tiny Plays about Sheffield features an extraordinary range of writers and genres - a mix that you would not usually see within one production. I'm incredibly proud that Sheffield People's Theatre can bring together emerging talent of all ages with internationally-experienced award-winning writers to stage brand new theatre - made in Sheffield.'
