THE TEAR THIEF, adapted from the book written by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, opens at Little Angel Theatre in London. Produced in association with the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, the show runs at Little Angel from tonight, 22 September to 4 November with its press showing on 29 September at 3.30pm. It is suitable for age 3 and up.

THE TEAR THIEF will be directed by the Little Angel’s Artistic Director Peter Glanville, with music composed and performed live by James Hesford and set design by Simon Plumridge. Puppet design is by Jan Zalud and the puppeteers are Claire Harvey and Lowri James.

The enchanting words of Carol Ann Duffy have been recorded by actress Juliet Stevenson as the soundtrack for this production.

Each night in the hours between supper and bedtime, The Tear Thief carries her waterproof, silvery sack as she steals the tears of every child who cries. But what does she do with all those tears?

“Your tears are the most precious tears of all. They are worth more than diamonds.”

This heart-warming fairy tale of a magical world is perfectly brought to life in this production, which tours to The Egg (Bath); North Wall (Oxford); Lakeside Arts Centre (Nottingham) and The Royal Exchange, Manchester.

Carol Ann Duffy is a British poet and playwright. She is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and was appointed Britain’s Poet Laureate in 2009. She is the first woman, the first Scot and the first openly gay person to hold this position. Her poems address issues such as oppression, gender and violence in an accessible language which has made them popular in schools and her poetry collections have won the Scottish Arts Council Award, a Somerset Maugham Award, the Whitbread Poetry Award and the T.S. Eliot Prize.

The Little Angel Theatre was founded by John and Lyndie Wright in 1961 and is the home of British puppetry. The Little Angel exists to celebrate, create, explore and develop diverse forms of puppetry and live animation for both children and adults. Recent productions include Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST in a joint production with the RSC and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s A VERY OLD MAN WITH ENORMOUS WINGS in a joint production with Kneehigh Theatre Company.

Public and schools booking for THE TEAR THIEF are now open.
