Leeds Theatre Company Nominated for National Writing Award

Leeds theatre company tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal are delighted to announce that their co-production ofThe Boy Who Cried Wolf by the acclaimed playwright Mike Kenny has been nominated in the Best Play for Children and Young People category at the 2014 Writers Guild of Great Britain Awards.

The production, which toured around the UK in 2013/14, is set to be the Christmas show at The Lawrence Batley Theatre from the 12-28 December.

The awards, which launched in 1961, give professional writers from across Great Britain the opportunity to honour their peers, and celebrate the importance of writing to the creative industries, both nationally and abroad.

Playwright Mike Kenny said about his nomination "I'm really delighted about being short-listed for a Writers Guild Award. To be nominated for a WGGB Award is a huge honour because it comes from your peers, other writers, so you can't slip much past them. It's also a thumbs up to tutti frutti because of their consistent policy of commissioning new writing'.

tutti frutti's Artistic Director Wendy Harris added "We are really thrilled Mike has been nominated for this award; it is so well deserved, and we are delighted at the response the play evoked from children and families on its national tours in 2013 and 2014. This award is important as it reminds us of the value of work for younger children and the importance and need for the young to have access to their cultural entitlement. It is also important for tutti frutti as it endorses our commitment to finding new ways of working with writers to create magical and relevant creative experiences for our young children."

York playwright Mike Kenny is one of England's leading writers, specialising in young people's theatre. His plays are performed regularly throughout the UK and all over the world. His recent works include the Olivier award winning play The Railway Children (which will be in London this year) and the critically acclaimed Blood + Chocolate.

The other nominated plays in the category are Minatour by Kevin Dyer for Polka Theatre, and Girls Like That by Evan Placey, a Unicorn and Synergy Theatre Production.

This Christmas tutti frutti will have two productions on stage in Yorkshire - The Boy Who Cried Wolf at the Lawrence Batley Theatre (12-28 December - www.thelbt.co.uk/) and their current production The Princess and the Pea at Sheffield Theatres (10 Dec-3 January - www.sheffieldtehatre.co.uk )
