2018 marks the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, a composer who transformed musical theatre and left a legacy of truly American music
Leonard Bernstein and West Side Story
Wednesday 12 September 2018 | 19.00 - 20.30
Bernstein is perhaps best known for his score for West Side Story, which continues to inspire and introduce new generations to the genre. The original production on Broadway in 1957 reflected a period of extraordinary cultural change that was taking place in the United States at this time.
But there were other notable works for the theatre - On the Town and Candide - and in the concert Hall, a Second Symphony, The Age of Anxiety and The Chichester Psalms.
To celebrate the centenary and Bishopsgate Institute's recent, sold out, production of West Side Story, join us for a special event with Nigel Simeone, author of Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story (2009) and The Leonard Bernstein Letters (2013), in conversation with writer and broadcaster Christopher Cook.
This talk will explore the original production and Bernstein's contribution, and consider how Bernstein's letters give us a unique insight into both the man and his music.
