Inky Cloak (www.inkycloak.co.uk) are delighted to present this work-in-progress preview in association with Hatched, The Albany's programme for new writing. We Raise Our Hands in the Sanctuary will run for one night only on July 2nd.
This bold new play delves into the back alleys of seventies New York, where two teenagers sewing for sequinned drag queens stumble upon the underground clubland in which labels of race, sexuality and hardship are melted away by music. The piece charts the duo's journey to a different life as all-conquering DJs, and a friendship that is gravely tested when their triumphs are threatened by ambition, addiction and the dawning onslaught of the AIDS crisis.
Audiences are invited to catch what will become the first act of the show, which combines fresh new writing with dance and club anthems of the era, and stay for a two-hour after-party DJ'd by Severino Panzetta from renowned collective Horse Meat Disco. This will be a work-in-progress preview where audiences have the chance not only to watch a story about salvation on the dancefloor, but also dance to the music that inspired the piece, as played by one of the key London DJs rooted in the traditions of New York clubs such as The Loft, The Gallery and the Paradise Garage.
The piece is written and directed by Inky Cloak's Daniel Fulvio & Martin Moriarty (Cover Her Face - Bethnal Green Working Men's Club; The Mark Of Arana - Shoreditch Town Hall).
The production team includes choreographer Joel O'Donoghue (Dragging Words - The Place), designer, Nina Patel-Grainger (The Secret Keeper - National Theatre Studio/Ovalhouse, design fellow - Bush Theatre), lighting designer: Marty Langthorne (Blackouts, Dickie Beau - Soho Theatre and tour; Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore!, Penny Arcade - The Albany and tour, Border Force, Duckie - Camden Centre)
