Henry Winkler is currently starring in his fourth annual production of PETER PAN in Liverpool; however, this is not the typical production of PETER PAN. This production is what's known to English audiences as a pantomime, which means, as described by the New York Times, "recastings of old children's stories with vaudeville, audience participation, puns, singing and cross-dressing."

Winkler has said when he originally was offered the role, he had no real knowledge of what he was getting into. "They called me and said, ‘Listen, it's a pantomime; you don't know what it is, and there's no way to explain it. You'll play Captain Hook.'"

Pantomimes have become a standard holiday tradition in England. In recent years, Sir Ian McKellen has worn a dress in his portrayal of Widow Tawnky in Aladdin and Stephen Fry wrote a pantomime of Cinderella, which played the Old Vic. Ameircan actors have also traveled to England to join the pantomimes, including Steve Guttenberg, Mickey Rooney, and Patrick Duffy, all who were featured in Cinderella. Pamela Anderson has joined in this year as well, portraying the Genie in Aladdin.

Winkler has made it clear he does not take the performance too seriously. "Are we doing ‘Macbeth'? No, but we're doing a wonderful, joyous production of ‘Peter Pan.' I cannot imagine that you could have more fun than doing this."

The cast for PETER PAN includes Natasha Hamilton and Les Dennis. Both have been featured in pantomimes in recent years.

PETER PAN will run through January 3rd. Visit the theatre's website for a full list of performances. Tickets range in price from £13.50 to £26 and may be purchased through the box office at 0844 847 2525 or through the theatre's website at www.liverpoolempire.org.uk.
