Casting is announced for Gregory Doran's production of Arthur Miller's 1949 Pulitzer prize-winning play Death of a Salesman, opening in the centenary year of Arthur Miller's birth. Previews start from 26 March, with the press night on Wednesday 1 April, 2015.
After a life of honest hard work, it is salesman Willy Loman's birth right to retire with his loving wife whilst his sons continue his legacy. Yet as old age and retirement approaches Willy struggles to reconcile his long cherished dream with the life he has actually lived. Miller's play of failed dreams and thwarted ambition is surely the greatest 20th Century American tragedy ever written.
As previously announced, Antony Sher and Alex Hassell return to the RSC following their roles as Falstaff and Prince Hal in Henry IV Parts I and II (currently running in London at the Barbican until 24 January 2015) to play father and son, Willy Loman and Biff. Playing Willy's loyal wife is Harriet Walter, who was last at the RSC as Cleopatra in Gregory Doran's 2006 production of Antony and Cleopatra. Harriet's other theatre credits include the recent all-female production of Henry IV at the Donmar Warehouse and Women Beware Women at the National. Completing the Loman family, as younger son Happy, is Sam Marks, who also returns following his role as Poins in Henry IV Parts I and II.
They are joined by Paul Birchard (Older Waiter); Ross Green (Stanley); Emma King (Miss Forsyth); Miranda Nolan (Letta); Sarah Parks (The Woman); Guy Paul (Uncle Ben); Joshua Richards (Charley) and Brodie Ross (Bernard). Further casting to be announced.
The production is designed by newly appointed RSC Director of Design Stephen Brimson Lewis with lighting by Tim Mitchell. The music is composed by Paul Englishby with sound by Martin Slavin.
