Internationally renowned Israeli music and
Dance Company, Mayumana, will make its long-awaited UK debut at Hackney Empire for a limited run this Spring. With a strong tailwind of critical acclaim behind it and following sell-out runs across the globe, the company will stage their latest work Currents at the East London venue from 18 April to 7 May.
This extraordinary dance and percussive extravaganza is inspired by the legendary rivalry between two titans of science, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, inventors and pioneers in the early days of electrical engineering.
Currents is a spectacular and explosive show that combines the company's trademark mix of dance, music and percussion. Two groups are on a journey. Each is inspired by a different aesthetic and artistic approach to the essence of light and electricity. Dialogue, a unique soundscape, lighting and visual effects all combine to produce a unique and universal theatrical experience. Fueled by a sense of humour and mischief, the group dynamic on stage is inexhaustible and infectious whilst the talent and beauty of the individual performer is highlighted and celebrated.
With an international cast, Currents features specially made musical instruments, massive video art projections and video mapping. The eleven skilled performers play on different instruments, athletically juggling between different sounds and rhythms to produce a playful blend of narrative story-telling, breath-taking movement and stunning visuals.
