Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), London's leading festival of outdoor theatre and performing arts, ask members of the public to nominate women for Rise!, a spectacular processional event through central Woolwich on Saturday 23 June 2018 that celebrates the lives and stories of women with a connection to Woolwich.
Inspired by the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, L'Homme debout's Rise! will feature placards that celebrate astonishing lives and stories of Woolwich women. GDIF is seeking nominations for who should appear on those placards and offering the opportunity for members of the public to carry the placard that features their nominated woman in the procession.
Writer Bernardine Evaristo is the first nominee. Evaristo, who was born in Woolwich and spent her teenage years at Greenwich Young People's Theatre, is the award-winning author of eight books and numerous other published and produced works. Her writing and projects are based around her interest in the African diaspora. She is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London.
Any woman including those who identify as non-binary, with a connection to Woolwich is eligible for nomination.
To submit a nomination, please send a good quality photo of the nominee and 50 words explaining why she should be celebrated to Elizabeth Bergeron: elizabeth@festival.org by 11 June.
Please also indicate with your nomination if you would like to carry the placard in the procession. There will be a run-through on Thursday 21 June, meeting on Powis Street at 8pm.
