Anyone with the passion to experience theatre from the inside is being invited to join Greenwich Theatre as a volunteer.

"With the first phase of a major package of building improvements underway, we are now looking to create a team of people to share our journey as move towards a bold new future," said James Haddrell, the theatre's Artistic and Executive Director.

Greenwich Council has invested £400,000 into phase one of a £2m programme of work to transform the theatre. The roof is being repaired, the building rewired, and a new studio created downstairs in the bar area.

"We are looking for people who are interested in theatre and could spare us a couple of nights a week from September to help us behind the bar and show people to their seats. In exchange we hope to welcome participants as full members of our team. As well as knowing that they are directly contributing to the theatre's future, some will also be able to shadow our staff to learn about marketing, venue management or the various technical aspects of theatre. It is important that this is a tangible opportunity for those who choose to support us to get something in return - whether that is a sense of supporting a worthwhile endeavour, of being part of a social activity, or of generating some of the knowledge and experience that could contribute to a career in the arts."

The drive for volunteers is part of a move to bring together the theatre's supporters. The theatre's Friends scheme, offering ticket discounts and other benefits to regular supporters, is also set for an overhaul this autumn, and the theatre's own fundraising has already secured enough to add technical lighting to the new studio space.

Central to the drive for volunteers will be Aneta Bajdevska, the theatre's new Front Of House Manager.

"Aneta has worked with us over the last couple of years as a duty manager but we're delighted to welcome her into this new full time role," said James.

"She will be leading the recruitment of new volunteers. The theatre has offered a range of training and professional development opportunities for many years but this is a major moment of growth for us, embedding the volunteer opportunities into the company. Aneta is just the person to engage with people in this way."

Funded by RoyAl Greenwich, Greenwich Theatre is one of London's foremost Off-West End theatres, presenting a year round programme of drama, musicals and family theatre. It is one of the country's leading supporters of young and emerging theatre makers, currently supporting 20 young artists and companies in everything from production and tour management to script development and marketing.

Since launching an artist support programme in 2011, Greenwich Theatre has enabled new theatre-makers to present their work around London and the UK, as well as in Dublin, Madrid and New York.

The Theatre plays a vital role in the cultural life of the local community, running a free open-access teenage choir with funding from Youth Music UK, alongside a programme of adult education provision including older people's performance sessions, puppetry classes and choral theatre training.

The Theatre is also a significant developer and programmer of theatre for children and families, and founder and co-producer of the annuAl Greenwich Children's Theatre Festival, part of the RoyAl Greenwich Festivals.
