Gina McKee, Richard Clothier to Star in Ustinov Studios' THE MOTHER

The Ustinov Studio, Bath has announced the final production in its spring 2015 season, the UK premiere of Florian Zeller's THE MOTHER, in a new translation by Christopher Hampton, directed by the Ustinov Studio's Artistic Director Laurence Boswell.

Anne loved that time in her life when she prepared breakfast each morning for her two young children, Sara and Nicolas. Now her children are grown and have lives and loves of their own. Spending hours alone, Anne has convinced herself that a weekend seminar in Dijon is a front for her husband Pierre's affair.

Perhaps Nicolas and his girlfriend Élodie will break up and her favoured son will return. He will come down for breakfast, she will put on her new red dress and they will go out. After all, tomorrow is Mother's Day...

Florian Zeller is fast becoming one of France's most well-known contemporary playwrights. The Mother was the winner of the Moliere Award, France's highest theatrical honour. Zeller is also author of The Father, which formed part of the autumn 2014 Ustinov Studio season. The production received audience and critical acclaim, and will be transferring to the Tricycle Theatre, London in May.

The Mother has been adapted by Christopher Hampton, who also adapted Zeller's The Father. He has also translated plays by Ibsen, Moliere, Chekhov and Yasmina Reza (including Art, God of Carnage and Life x 3). He won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the adaptation of his own play, Dangerous Liaisons.

Artistic Director of the Ustinov Studio Laurence Boswell is a multi award-winning director who has directed a number of hits in the West End and on Broadway. He was Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, and is an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Most recently, he has directed Exit the King, Intimate Apparel and Things We Do for Love.

The cast includes Gina McKee (Anne), Richard Clothier (Pierre), William Postlethwaite (Nicolas) and Cara Horgan (Élodie).

Gina McKee is a BAFTA-winning actress. Her theatre credits include Richard III (Trafalgar Studios); King Lear (Donmar Warehouse/ UK Tour/ Brooklyn Academy); Di, Viv and Rose (Hampstead Theatre). Her film credits include In The Loop (BBC Films); Atonement (Working Title); Notting Hill (Working Title). Television credits include The Borgias (Showtime); Hepburn (BBC); The Street 2 (Granada); Our Friends in the North (BBC TV).

Richard Clothier's theatre credits include Play Strindberg (Ustinov Studio); King Lear (National Theatre); Fifty Words (Theatre Royal Bath / Arcola Theatre); Richard III (Propeller UK and International Tour)- for which he won the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Performance. His television credits include New Tricks (BBC); Henry V (BBC 2); Spooks (Kudos); Foyle's War (Bentley Productions).

William Postlethwaite's theatre credits include Our Ajax (Southwark Playhouse); King Lear (Theatre Royal Bath); Longing (Hampstead Theatre); Fireface (Young Vic); Collaborators (National Theatre). His television credits include Foyle's War: Trespass (FW Productions); Holby City (BBC).

Cara Horgan's theatre credits include Secret Theatre (Lyric Hammersmith); School For Scandal (Barbican); Pains Of Youth (National Theatre); The House Of Special Purpose (Chichester) and Hedda Gabler (Gate Theatre). Her film credits include The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (Miramax) and The Libertine (Weinstein Company).
