The Garyhaus Players will be debuting 'I have never cared for sunsets' at the Regency Tavern May 5-20 as part of the Brighton Fringe.
The Players include recent graduate in Technical Effects for Performance from London College of Fashion, Naomi Oppenheim (with a specialty in puppet making), puppeteer Lori Hopkins (co-director of Coruscate Theatre, currently studying a Diploma in Professional Puppetry with the London School of Puppetry) and illustrator Freya Harrison. Live musical accompaniment is provided by Tye Mcgivern of 'BBC Suffolk Introducing' favourites, Sealionwoman. After the Brighton Fringe, they will be performing at the Secret GArden Party festival in Cambridgeshire.
Their first production is a collaboration with emerging playwright and historian of science, Imogen Clarke. 'I have never cared for sunsets' is a comedy following characters in a fictional land as they struggle to establish democracy and find the perfect system of generating knowledge. A young Isaac Newton battles against an evil philosopher of science trying to falsify his precious gravity. A physics teacher's life is ruined by his inability to understand relativity theory. Zeno of Elea insists that all motion is an illusion, while the citizens' first democratic leader insists that reality is inaccessible. And all the while the aristocrat Mr Rudolph endeavours to satisfy his endless cravings for leeches. Together, they explore the Platonic notion that there can be no end to the troubles of the state until 'Philosophers are Kings'.
The show will be staged at one of Brighton's hidden gems, the Grade II listed Regency Tavern. Harking back to the splendour and glamour of Regency Brighton, the pub is richly decorated with fine furnishings, cherubs, paintings and ornate mirrors. The Tavern was included in the 2011 VOGUE Secret Address Book, a supplement to the December issue. The Garyhaus Players will be performing in the beautiful cellar courtyard, at a safe distance from the ornamental fish.
The Garyhaus Players are: Naomi Oppenheim, Freya Harrison, Lori Hopkins, Tye Mcgivern, Sam Fox, Imogen Clarke.
The show will run 5th/12th/19th May - 2.30pm / 6.30pm and 6th/13th/20th May - 3.30pm.
