With Easter Sunday just around the corner, Coventry's Belgrade Theatre is gearing up for the school holidays with a series of five fantastic family shows.
This spring, kids can look forward to favourite fairytales reimagined, bestselling books brought to life, and brand new show in Honalee Media's popular Easter Bunny series. Here's a round-up of what to look out for over the next couple of weeks.
Red Riding Hood & the Wolf
Internationally renowned for their innovative puppetry productions, the acclaimed Little Angel Theatre offer a fresh look at a familiar fairy tale in the enchanting Red Riding Hood & the Wolf, running 3-5 April.
Frustrated by the characters in her bedtime story, a restless little girl called Robyn decides to change how things play out. What if Red Riding Hood wasn't so sugar and spice and all things nice? What if the Big Bad Wolf wasn't big or bad at all, but actually an all-round nice guy?
Join Robyn on a journey through a world of homemade make-believe as everyday objects in her bedroom are transformed into fantastic characters and magical places before your very eyes.
Directed by Jimmy Grimes, whose previous credits include the hit shows War Horse and The One Hundred and One Dalmatians, this endearing new production tells the story of a couple of misfits just trying to fit in, and is guaranteed to delight kids and grown-ups alike.
Dear Zoo
Brought to the stage in a charming adaptation by Norwell Lapley Productions, Rod Campbell's bestselling lift-the-flap book Dear Zoo makes its theatrical debut this spring, coming to the Belgrade on 6 & 7 April as part of a brand new UK tour.
Since its initial publication in 1982, this contemporary kids' classic has delighted generations of young readers, selling more than 8 million copies worldwide. Unfolding the story with engaging puppetry, live music and lots of audience interaction, this new production offers a new way to experience the story for both newcomers and fans of the book alike.
Suitable for children aged 2+, it's also an ideal introduction to the magic of live performance for first-time theatre-goers.
The Twisted Tale of Hansel & Gretel
Working in partnership with the Midlands-based Open Theatre Company and Metro-Boulot-Dodo, Birmingham Hippodrome tour their first ever home-produced show to the Belgrade Theatre this Easter, with Hansel & Gretel marking the first in a series of four planned "Twisted Tales" on 11 & 12 April.
Learning disabled performers drawn from BecauseWeCanCanCan take centre stage in this quirky new adventure, combining live music, physical theatre and innovative digital design. You might think you know the story of Hansel & Gretel, but prepare to have your expectations shattered as strong-willed characters kick back against the flustered narrator and his version of events.
Showcasing a powerhouse of emerging talent from the region, The Twisted Tale of Hansel and Gretel features Coventry performers Kimisha Lewis and Rishard Beckett (of Rishard and Richard) in the title roles, as well as The Fabularium's Charles Craggs as the musical Mockingbird.
Easter Bunny's Eggs Factor
Following last year's Eggs-ellent Adventure at the Belgrade, Honalee Media's ever-popular Easter Bunny is back in Coventry with a brand new singing contest-themed show!
Everyone is excited about the Easter Bunny's new singing contest, and Marty MacDonald, Henrietta the Hen and Professor Pinky all plan to enter. The only problem is, they can't quite choose which song to sing! Can you help them decide - and find out whether YOU have the Eggs Factor too?
Running 13 & 14 April, Easter Bunny's Eggs Factor promises to be the most chocolatey Easter show ever, with a chance for every child to join in with favourite nursery rhymes, meet and greet the Easter Bunny, and receive a free Easter chocolate treat!
Suitable for kids aged 2-7, this participatory production makes a perfect introduction to live performance for first-time theatre-goers.
What the Ladybird Heard
Expect big heroics from one little ladybird this Easter as Kenny Wax Family bring their colourful adaptation of What the Ladybird Heard Live to Coventry.
Bringing to life the bestselling picture book by former Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson and acclaimed illustrator Lydia Monks, this contemporary classic sees the smallest creature on the farm manage to save her farmyard friends when two crafty robbers hatch a cunning plan to steal a prize cow!
Join the woolly sheep, the hairy hog, the fat red hen and the dainty dog along with the ladybird herself in this heartwarming story 13 & 14 April.

The Belgrade Theatre Trust is a registered charity (number 219163). This means that all the money given, raised or earned is not distributed as profit but kept and reinvested in the work that we do. We are reliant on the valued support of our donors and sponsors to ensure that we can continue to develop our artistic and educational work and remain central to the communities that we serve.
The Belgrade Theatre is supported by Arts Council England who champion, develop and invest in artistic and cultural experiences that enrich people's lives. Between 2015 and 2018, they plan to invest £1.1 billion of public money from government and an estimated £700 million from the National Lottery to help create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country.
The Belgrade Theatre is part of a network of organisations promoting engagement with arts and culture in the lead-up to Coventry's City of Culture year in 2021. In December 2017, supporters of the Coventry bid gathered at the Belgrade Theatre in the heart of the city to watch the announcement live from Hull, with press on hand to broadcast their reactions to the country. Over the next few years, we will be working closely with both the City of Culture Trust and with communities across the region to present an exciting programme of shows and events reflecting the diversity and passion that made Coventry's bid a success.
In March 2018, the Belgrade Theatre marks 60 years since its opening in 1958. To celebrate, an exciting programme of shows and events has been planned for the year ahead, developed in close partnership with our local communities and partners, including a performance takeover of the nearby Coventry Evening Telegraph building in July, followed by home-produced shows and an anniversary gala this autumn.
