Festive Folk, Gospel and Ballet on Tap Next Month at The Marlowe Studio

Festive folk, gospel and ballet are some of the shows on the bill at The Marlowe Studio, Canterbury, next month.

The eclectic and high-energy eight-piece band Police Dog Hogan play on Thursday 1 December. Combining fiddle, banjo, trumpet, mandolin, drums, guitars and four-part harmonies, their music is a fusing of country, pop, folk, and rocking urban bluegrass. Much-loved Guardian columnist Tim Dowling is the banjo player, while singer James Studholme runs the Production Company responsible for the John Lewis Christmas ads.

Award-winning comedian Jo Caulfield looks at life's traps and how to avoid them in The Customer Is Always Wrong on Friday 2 December.

The Eulogy Of Toby Peach (Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December) invites audiences to experience a young man's journey with cancer in this honest, fascinating and inspiring exploration of modern science and the human body.

The Green Rock River Band (Thursday 8 December) combine music hall, Americana, folk tradition and jazz with modern songwriting and original arrangements for today's audiences.

Emily Portman, who was nominated as Folk Singer Of The Year in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, is touring with a specially-formed band to celebrate her critically acclaimed third album, Coracle, and comes to The Marlowe Studio on Friday 9 December.

A new version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen is on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 December, while another retelling of a classic story is on Friday 16 December. A Christmas Carol - As Told By Jacob Marley (Deceased) is a reprisal of James Hyland's award-winning interpretation of the Dickens' seasonal novel.

The gig by CoCo And The Butterfields on Sunday 18 December is sold out.

A Christmas show from folk favourites Belshazzar's Feast is on Tuesday 20 December. Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead and Faustus) and Paul Hutchinson (of Hoover The Dog) will mix traditional folk with seasonal material along with their usual touch of classical, jazz, pop, music hall and wry humour.

Gospel music comes to The Marlowe Studio for the first time in the form of CK Gospel Choir. One of the UK's premier gospel choirs, they will be performing their unique brand of gospel/soul/jazz music to celebrate their new Christmas album.

The best comedians in the UK for young people come together in a Comedy Club 4 Kids on Thursday 22 December, and the much-loved music and characters from The Nutcracker take to the studio stage from Friday 23 to Wednesday 28 December. The production, which sold out last year, is a child-friendly adaptation of the ballet.

The Marlowe Friends Committee present Get Happy, a journey through the life of Judy Garland, on Sunday 11 December.
