Eye Spy Arts presents JEW(ish)- Contemporary Theatre That's 100% Kosher.
Contemporary Theatre and puppetry, part of SUSPENSE London Puppetry Festival 2011
7pm & 9.15pm Thurs 3rd November 2011 Pleasance Theatre, North Road, N7 9EF
JEW(ish) is a thought provoking work of theatre centered on an individual's search for his cultural identity. Eye Spy Arts - theatre makers Liat Rosenthal and Oliver James Hymans - present a reworking of their celebrated theatre performance at SUSPENSE London Puppetry Festival 2011 - the award-winning puppetry festival produced by The Little Angel Theatre.
The performance weaves together an imagined Jewish heritage with real family oral histories, stories and memories. Traveling from shtetl to city, from past to present, and from the personal to the political, Jew(ish) explores cultural identity and the sense of belonging.
"A little diaspora of Jewish sights and sounds...that brim with ideas and emotions that could speak for anyone." SanJay Roy, Guardian Critic
"Beautiful scenographic ideas" Eleanor Sikorski, Resolution! Critic
Jew(ish) uses object manipulation, puppetry and live animation to express elements of Jewish culture through a mixture of poignant and comic imagery. Within JEW(ish) objects are central to the narrative; a story is created from discarded books, a world is found in an abandoned packing case, and secrets are revealed in a bowl of chicken soup...
"I am a Jew. Well, I'm Jew-ish. More 'ish' than Jew. Except on high holidays."
Jew(ish) originally started life as a dance piece performed in February 2011 at Resolution! festival at The Place in London. The collaboration brought together contemporary dancers and puppeteers, live cello and violin to create an enchanting world... Join us once again as we animate the diverse voices within the Jewish community - everyone has something to kvetch about!
Jew(ish) is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council England and the Unity Theatre Trust.
