English Touring Opera return to the Lyceum Theatre from Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 April with two of the most popular operas in the repertoire, The Barber of Seville and Eugene Onegin, as part of their Spring 2012 national tour.
High spirited, vocally brilliant and a work of comic genius, English Touring Opera's new production ofRossini's The Barber of Seville will be performed over two evenings on Monday 16 April and Wednesday 18April at 7.45pm. Bass-baritone Andrew Slater, an ex-Sheffield teacher who is now based in Chesterfield, will sing one of the leading roles, Doctor Bartolo. Guardian to the young Rosina, Bartolo also wants to marry her and stands in the way of her love to Count Almaviva. But the young lovers, with the help of Figaro, outwit the curmudgeonly Dr Bartolo. Set in 17th century Seville, the opera is based on a play by French writer Philippe Beaumarchais, whose famous 'Figaro' plays also inspired Mozart to pen The Marriage of Figaro.
English Touring Opera also perform their revival of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin for one night onTuesday 17 April at 7.45pm. With heartfelt arias and ensembles, splendid choruses, ballroom scenes and a dramatic duel to the death, this romantic opera set in 19th century St Petersburg is set to take audiences on an emotional journey.
Both operas are performed in English with a live orchestra and in lavish period costume.
