Deep in the English countryside, a small village, a gay son, a daughter who won’t speak and a thatcher who hates Thatcher collide under the looming presence of a defunct paper mill in a darkly comic drama.
Bud Take the Wheel is an exceptionally written tale of a family at odds with itself and the changing world. At its heart is the wish of every young person who grew up rural anywhere - the need for flight, the wish to escape. Bud Take the Wheel chews up rural entrapment, spits up countryside clichés and writes a twisted love song to our green and pleasant land.
Clara Brennan is one of theatre’s most exciting emerging writing talents. Her short play Rain won rave reviews and was nominated for The Stage awards when it appeared as part of a double bill at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe. In Bud Take the Wheel, she draws on her own rural upbringing, crafting language and dialogue as deftly as her character Bud thatches roofs. Clara has recently taken part in this year’s Royal Court Studio writers’ programme and has had short plays produced at the Soho Theatre studio and Oval House Theatre. Bud... is her first full-length play.
Reclaim is a multi function Production Company working in film, theatre and photography. Bud... will be directed by founder member Hannah Price, a graduate of the National Theatre Young Director’s Course whose previous work includes Qissat at Oval House Theatre, Loving Ophelia at the Pleasance London and Confusions at the Brighton Festival. Bud Take the Wheel I Feel a Song Coming On is one of two shows Hannah is directing for Reclaim at Underbelly this year, alongside That Moment.
Both shows are being presented by Reclaim in partnership with SPL, the original producers behind West End hit Into The Hoods and last Edinburgh's award-winning rap-theatre show The Rebel Cell.
