The Edinburgh Festival and off-Broadway hit Every Brilliant Thing comes to The Marlowe Studio, Canterbury, next month (June).
Based on true and untrue stories, Duncan Macmillan's new play is about depression and the lengths we go to for those we love.
Jonny Donahoe plays a six year old, whose mum is in hospital. His dad says she's "done something stupid" and finds it hard to be happy. So Jonny starts to make a list of everything that's brilliant about the world: ice cream, kung fu movies, burning things, laughing so hard you shoot milk out of your nose, water fights ...
He leaves the note on his mum's pillow and knows she's read it because she's corrected his spellings. Soon, the list takes on a life of its own.
Both heartbreaking and life-affirming, Every Brilliant Thing is an uplifting look at hope in the face of adversity. Each show involves members of the audience, making each performance unique.
Presented by Paines Plough and Pentabus Theatre Company, Every Brilliant Thing had humble beginnings at the Ludlow Fringe Festival in 2013, and then went on to complete a short UK tour, including an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe. The show transferred to Barrow Street Theatre, New York, finishing a 16-week run at the end of March.
Lyn Gardner described Every Brilliant Thing as "One of the funniest plays you'll ever see about depression -- and possibly one of the funniest shows you'll ever see full stop" in her review for The Guardian.
Every Brilliant Thing is at The Marlowe Studio at 8pm on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June. Tickets are £12 (concessions available; booking fee applies) from the Box Office on 01227 787787 or marlowetheatre.com.
