The JMK Award comes to the Young Vic for the first time as 2011 winner Cathal Cleary directs rising stars Charlie Murphy (Pygmalion, Abbey Theatre Dublin) and Rory Fleck-Byrne (Cause Célèbre, Old Vic) in Enda Walsh's sensational modern classic.
Pig and Runt are soul mates. Born seconds apart in the same hospital they are inseparable, with an almost supernatural understanding. As partners in crime, they share an appetite for drunkenness, recklessness, adventure and destruction. But on the eve of their 17th birthday it is an appetite for sex that threatens to tear them apart.
Cathal Cleary's directing credits include Appointment in Limbo (Dublin Fringe) and The Cripple of Inishmaan (Town Hall, Galway). He assisted Polly Findlay on
Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales (Lyric Hammersmith) and is currently assisting previous JMK Award winner
Joe Hill-Gibbins on The Beauty Queen of Leenane running at the Young Vic until September.
The James Menzies-Kitchin Young Director Award is given each year to an outstanding young theatre director. The award is recognised as a vital springboard for young directors of outstanding potential at an early stage in their careers, combining prestige with the practical benefits of a production budget and rehearsal and production experience.
