D.I.Y. theatre collective Dirty Market are back with a radical theatre adaptation of Surrealist Leonora Carrington's novel The Hearing Trumpet.

92-year old Marian is deaf and lost in her memories. Dumped in a sinister care home, Marian finds herself amongst a rebellious band of elderly inmates. Together they take on the despotic rulers of the retirement home, survive the apocalypse and pit themselves against the patriarchal evils of the world.

Opening on Carrington's centenary, 6 April 2017, Dirty Market's The Hearing Trumpet is the UK's first major theatre adaptation of Carrington's work. An iconic surrealist and visionary, Carrington (1917-2011) is best known for her detailed paintings inspired by myth, female sexuality, and autobiography.

Dirty Market's The Hearing Trumpet is a timely challenge to our society's "fitter, happier, more productive" ideology and a joyful celebration of outcasts and rebels.

Dirty Market co-directors Georgina and Jon say, "People are polarised... increasingly isolated from each other in our alienating world. The Hearing Trumpet offers surreal, exceptionally strange resolutions: it points to an alternative, empowered way of imagining, operating and relating."

The Hearing Trumpet will take place at the historic Old Library in Burgess Park, Southwark. It will be the first large scale theatre production at The Old Library since Southwark Council and Theatre Delicatessen teamed up to make it a new arts space in South East London.

Emma Blackman, Theatre Delicatessen's Old Library Producer and Programmer said, "We're extremely excited to welcome Dirty Market to the Old Library. After watching numerous Dirty Market productions over the past decade, I'm certain that their visually-stunning and thought-provoking work will be a perfect match for this historical and welcoming venue. Theatre Deli is constantly looking to support companies who develop experiential and non-traditional performances, such as The Hearing Trumpet, which will launch our Spring Season Programme. We look forward to welcoming the local community and London's wider artistic community to the venue and to the Old Library Bar."
