Plastic blights our oceans, rivers and lakes; infects animals and litters the planet. To this end Darlington Hippodrome recently changed to stocking paper straws in all of its five bars.
Darlington Hippodrome's Commercial Manager Peter Robson said "I am delighted that Darlington Hippodrome has taken this great step towards helping reduce the environmental impact of single use plastic through our introduction of paper straws. People visiting the theatre really appreciate the efforts we are making to reduce plastic waste."
Peter continued "We would usually get through approximately 10,000 plastic straws in a 6 month period at the Hippodrome, so moving to paper straws will have a huge positive impact. We will still be stocking a small number of plastic straws for individuals who require them."
The theatre also decided to dramatically cut down on the number of season brochures they have printed and distributed to promote the shows for their Autumn 2018 Season. 15,000 fewer brochures were produced and distributed - a huge saving of paper and production energy.
Rather than see a fall in sales by doing so, Darlington Hippodrome has welcomed a 34% increase in sales compared with their Spring / Summer 2018 brochure. This increase was due in part to the additional promotion of shows on online platforms.
Rebecca Howarth the Hippodrome's Sales and Marketing Manager added "We are constantly looking at ways to improve our impact on the environment whilst looking to increase the number of visitors to the theatre, whether to see a production or just to visit the theatre and take a look at the exhibitions in our three gallery spaces or to meet up with friends for a coffee in the new Hippo Lounge."
