The Watermill Theatre announces the cast for a new adaptation of THE RIVALS, Richard Brinsley Sheridan's classic comedy of desire, intrigue and romantic delusion. Adapted by Beth Flintoff, whose credits include Henry I of England and Oscar Wilde on Trial (Reading Between The Lines Theatre Company) and Greenham: 100 Years of War and Peace (Rosa Productions), this lively new version will be directed by Jonathan Humphreys whose credits include The Mighty Walzer (Manchester Royal Exchange) and Romeo and Juliet (Sheffield Crucible). THE RIVALS will run at The Watermill Theatre from 15 March to 21 April.
Produced by The Watermill, the cast includes Daniel Abelson (Bob Acres), Charlotte Bate (Julia), Emma Denly (Lydia Languish), Ncuti Gatwa (Jack Absolute), Christopher Logan (Sir Lucius), James Mack (Faulkland), Julia St John (Mrs Malaprop) and Michael Thomas (Sir Anthony).
Affairs of the heart, money, and the generation gap combine to create a day of confusion in Sheridan's satirical comedy. Lydia Languish is passionately in love with a dashing but penniless soldier with whom she plans to elope. Mrs Malaprop, her guardian, commands she 'illiterate him' from her memory and marry the rich and handsome son of a friend who is 'the very pineapple of politeness'. Little do they realise that both poor Beverley and the wealthy Captain Absolute are one and the same young man.
Funny and fast-moving, THE RIVALS is designed by James Cotterill, lighting design is by Katharine Williams and Simon Slater is composer and sound designer.
Tickets: from £15 - £26.50.
