Sell A Door Theatre Company are pleased to announce their new Playwright in Residence, who will work with them from this September.
American playwright Carolyn Kras has been awarded a Fulbright-Lusk Award to fund nine months in London from September 2015 through to July 2016 as Playwright in Residence at Sell A Door Theatre Company.
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding and cultural exchange between participating countries. Fulbright playwriting alumni include Edward Albee (former Soviet Union), Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Germany), Kenneth Lin (Taiwan), and José Rivera (U.K.).
David Hutchinson, Artistic Director for Sell A Door said today, "We are thrilled to have Carolyn joining us in September as our first Playwright in Residence, supported by the prestigious Fulbright award. Carolyn is an emerging talent, whose work I have followed for a number of years, and to have her based with us in Greenwich for a year - developing not only her own craft, but also the skills of young writers in Greenwich as part of our Young Writers scheme - is so exciting for us. Carolyn will contribute something very special to the theatre sector in this country, I have no doubt about that".
Kras' play will dramatize historical events in the lives of King George III's daughters to explore parallels with contemporary sexual assault cover-ups. She will conduct research at the British Library and The University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries, write and develop the piece, and participate in a rehearsed reading of her work led by Sell A Door Theatre Company.
Carolyn previously received the Visionary Playwright Award and Commission from Theater Masters, for which she wrote the play Mine & Yours, a nominee for the L. Arnold Weissberger Award and a top 20 Finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.
Kras said today, "I'm delighted to partner with Sell A Door Theatre Company. Artistic Director David Hutchinson is a great supporter of new work and fresh voices, and I look forward to connecting with his exceptional team and the London theatre community."
Kras' work has been produced and/or developed by Chicago Dramatists, Stage Left Theatre, 20% Theatre Company Chicago, Chicago New Work Festival, Live Girls! Theater, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre, Centenary Stage Company, Pittsburgh New Works Festival, Theater Masters, and Long Beach Playhouse. Her screenplay Magnetic is in development with producers Diane Nabatoff and Alex Ross. Her honours include the William Randolph Hearst Creative Artist Fellowship as well as writing residencies at Ucross Foundation, Anderson Center, and Ragdale Foundation. Kras holds an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.A. in Drama from Washington University in St. Louis.
