Devised and hosted by flamboyant part-time pop-star, musical alchemist and veteran of the Duckie Collective Boogaloo Stu, Pop Magic! combines cabaret, pop music and audience participation with cutting-edge recording technologies and social network platforms. Audience members collectively write, record and produce their own pop single and video, featuring an assembled cast of participants performing a flashmob dance routine. Along the way, Stu reveals the modest but glittering highs and barrel-scraping lows of his own pop career. The Camden People's Theatre, 58 - 60 Hampstead Road, London NW1 2PY, hosts Pop Magic from Fri 8 to Sun 10 June, 7.30pm.
Boogaloo Stu is a singer, musician, DJ and cabaret performer based in Brighton. Often described as a "showbiz multi-tasker", Stu started out as a knitwear designer, with clients including Bjork, Kylie Minogue and Mariah Carey, before turning to DJ-ing and performing on the alternative club scene in the mid-90s, at clubs such as Popstarz, Duckie and Ghetto. Stu is a member of the Duckie Collective, and starred in their Olivier Award-winning C'est Duckie, and in the Latin-American show School Of Dance at the Barbican Centre. He also hosted Eurovision for BBCi in 2008.
