Following critically acclaimed runs at The Yard and the National Theatre in London, Alexander Zeldin's Beyond Caring, a highly topical show which pulls no punches in its vivid depiction of the human cost of zero-hours contracts, comes to HOME in Manchester in July.
Four people arrive to work the night shift in a meat factory. They meet for the first time. They are employed as cleaners, by a temp agency. They are all on zero- hours contracts. Every shift, they clean. Every four hours, they take a break. They drink tea or coffee together. They read magazines. They chat.
As it gets light, they go home, or to another job. The cycle goes on... And on... Strangers. Until something stirs, until isolated people get too close to one another, too fast.
Beyond Caring was described by The Times as "a ringing condemnation of an economic practice that puts profit before people and turns the basic business of earning a living into a barely sustainable, soul-destroying hell", while the New York Times wrote that "Beyond Caring is beyond praise."
Alexander Zeldin's brutally honest and darkly humorous play, created by a process of thorough investigation, first-hand experience, and with the participation of individuals in low-paid work, exposes the sometimes desperate stories of an invisible class.
Written through devising with the company, and directed by Alexander Zeldin, currently Associate Director at Birmingham Rep, the cast comprises Luke Clarke, James Doherty, Janet Etuk, Kristin Hutchinson, and Victoria Moseley.
