Applications Now Open To Take Part In The Inaugural Exeter Fringe Festival In Summer 2019

In July 2019, the inaugural Exeter Fringe Festival will take place. The 2019 festival will see performances take place at Exeter Phoenix and Barnfield Theatre across 10 days from 26 July to 4 August. Festival organisers are looking for a range of genres of performance including fringe theatre, family work and stand up comedy.

Applications to take part in the festival are open until 8th March with festival organisers aiming to provide a fair deal for artists and a wide ranging programme for audiences taking advantage of the excellent tourism that Exeter benefits from in the summer months.

Since the closure of The Bike Shed Theatre, support for fringe theatre companies has been limited in terms of development of new work and performance opportunities. Exeter Fringe Festival aims to help redress the balance and give audiences a range of smaller scale work to experience in the city. Organisers have already partnered with Exeter Northcott Theatre and Exeter Phoenix to programme the festival and are working with other cultural organisations and Exeter College to truly embed the festival in the community.

Elaine and Alex, the Exeter Fringe Festival Directors, talk about the idea behind the festival's inception: "Festivals have always gone down well in Exeter with both artists and audiences. With the recent success of Women of the World Exeter and other similar events, we wanted to create an annual festival that could showcase the amazing talent in Exeter and the South West alongside some of the brilliant work being made elsewhere in the country. We've had really engaging conversations with artists and cultural leaders in the city so far and have received a huge level of support and encouragement for the festival to happen."

Artists who take part in the festival will be offered a fair financial deal for performances, marketing support, a technical operator and the chance to take in everything Exeter has to offer from the thriving independent sector to its beautiful countryside location just half an hour from the beach with plenty to explore in the city centre itself.

If the festival is successful this year, organisers have big plans for future years including additional venues, a longer programme and wider collaborations with other venues in the South West.
