Those in power make the laws to suit their pockets. Ordinary people are worse off. The leadership are at a crossroads with the will of the people, though they think they are correct. Sound familiar? That's right it's a Greek tragedy (with an 80's twist).
Aequitas presents Antigone in a new 90 minute translation all their own. Set in Durham in Thatcher's 80's during the miner's strike, Antigone wishes to bury her brother Polyneices, a striking miner who has been killed in a fight with his twin Eteocles (a scab). However this has been made illegal by new police chief, Creon, their aunt who has taken control of the city. Creon sentences her niece to death and chaos ensues. With this play, Aequitas takes a look at the universal truth that is: power corrupts, and what the fallout might be.
Fresh off her debut (Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, set in Trump America), Rachael Bellis is directing what is sure to be another hotly controversial political piece, albeit one with scope for lighter moments. The cast includes Soroosh Lavasani, fresh off the national tour of the Kite Runner, as older brother Ismene and fiance Haemon; Mary Tillett as Creon, and Natasha Ravenscroft as Antigone. Lighting will be by Holly Ellis, sound by Annie May Fletcher, and set design by Geraldine Cooper.
Aequitas is once again working under Equity's Fringe Agreement and is still committed to an equal opportunities casting policy.
