A locally born actor, who has had success in TV and National Theatre, returns to the city this Spring as the lead role in A Brave Face - a poignant story about the effects of war on soldiers - which heads to Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 23 April.
Winchester-born, James Greaves - who starred in BBC period drama, Taboo, and My Holiday Hostage Hell: Kidnap in Iran - plays a soldier named Ryan who is deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. He is there to see the world, learn a trade and be part of a team. But during one particularly desperate tour of duty he sees things he can't talk about and only when he returns home does his true battle begin.
Created by the award-winning theatre company, Vamos Theatre - who specialise in wordless, masked productions, the story tries to better understand Post Traumatic Stress and the impact it can have on even the closest of families, following two years of extensive research with ex and serving soldiers, their families, health professionals and military charities, with the show's Artistic Director, Rachael Savage, at its forefront, meeting individuals.
Also from the city is Paul Milford, who works as a technician for Vamos Theatre. He has built a career working backstage at a host of local theatres, as well as at the University of Winchester.
The play is inspired by Matthew Green's book, Aftershock, which focuses on what the country's veterans face returning home, and Vamos Theatre presents its story with compassion, fearlessness, engaging storytelling and emotional insight that speaks to audiences without saying a word.
A Brave Face will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 23 April. A post-show chat follows the performance. To find out more, or to book, visit www.theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01962 840 440.
