CANDOCO DANCE COMPANY, the contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers has its Scottish Premiere at Dundee Rep Theatre on 25 May, 8pm with 'Turning 20' – their anniversary bill of three commissions.
Candoco first performed at Dundee Rep in 2009 and maintain a great connection with Dundee and Scotland. They have strong links with Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT), which is based in Dundee Rep, having worked with SDT's former Dance Agent for Change Caroline Bowditch, former SDT Artistic Director Fellow, Marc Brew and currently work with ex SDT Dancers Chris Owen and Dan Daw.
Renowned for exciting and inspiring its audiences, Candoco bring about change in thinking about dance, about ability, about who is allowed 'in' and how we interact with and create our worlds.
Originally choreographed on a cast of non-disabled dancers, Candoco adds its unique signature to Set and Reset/ Reset by celebrated American choreographer Trisha Brown. Performed to a contagious song by Laurie Anderson and with a new set design, based on Rauschenberg's original version, Candoco give a unique and unforgettable take on an old classic.
Confronting us with the present is French choreographer Rachid Ouramdane. Combining strong visuals, by Artist and Designer La Bourette with atmospheric soundscapes by Jean Baptiste Julien, in this piece dancers confront their own human existence and bring current affairs to contemporary dance.
Finally, in a first for Candoco, Matthias Sperling shows what the future might hold in This is it, a stunning solo. This playful piece captures the uniqueness of one dancer on stage allowing the audience time to reflect and focus on every detail of the movement and the feelings that it evokes, providing a different experience when watching dance.
Candoco Dance Company is the contemporary dance company of disabled and non- disabled dancers. The company has won numerous awards over the and in 2008 they performed at the Beijing 2008/London 2012 Handover Ceremonies in front of 90,000 in the Bird's Nest stadium to 1.6 billion TV viewers. More recently they have been awarded a commission for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project Unlimited
